  2. What is a circle? • Technically speaking, a circle is the set of points in a plane at a given distance from a given point in that plane. • A circle divides the plane into three separate regions: • the interior of the circle • the exterior of the circle • The circle itself.

  3. Parts of a circle • The point in the middle is the circle is the center. Circles are named for their centers. • The distance from the center to the outside of the circle is the radius.

  4. What is a chord? • A chord is a segment whose endpoints lie on a circle. • A chord is usually named for its endpoints.

  5. What is a secant? • A secant is a line that contains a chord. • A secant is named for two points on the secant.

  6. What is a diameter? • A diameter is a chord that contains the center of a circle.

  7. What is a tangent? • A tangent to a circle is a line in the plane of a circle that intersects the circle in exactly one point, called the point of tangency.

  8. What is a sphere? • A sphere is the set of points in a plane at a given distance from a given point in space.

  9. A few more terms to know • Congruent circles are circles that have congruent radii. • Concentric circles are circles that lie in the same plane and have the same center. • Concentric spheres are spheres that have the same center.

  10. What does it mean to be inscribed? • When a polygon is inscribed into a circle, then it touches the circle itself and the interior of the circle, but does not touch the exterior. • The polygons vertices are on the circle

  11. What does it mean to be circumscribed? • When a polygon is circumscribed around a circle, then it touches the circle itself and the exterior of the circle, but does not touch the interior. • The vertices of the polygon are not on the circle.
