  2. 13Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. 14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him. 15Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his… (cont’d) ~~Mark 2: 13-17

(There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) 16But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with.. 5. SCANDAL!!

  6. SCANDAL!! One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. ~ Job 1:6

  7. SCANDAL!! When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened. ~Jonah 3:10

  8. 2But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name or who speaks in the name of another god must die.’ 21“You may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the Lord?’ 22If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.” ~~Deuteronomy 18: 20-22

  9. This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry.* 2So he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! ~~Jonah 4: 1-4

  10. This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry.*2So he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! ~~Jonah 4: 1-4 *…a great evil came upon Jonah.

  11. I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to anger and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. 3Kill me now, Lord! I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.” 4The Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry about this?” ~~Jonah 4: 1-4

  12. Scandalous Grace is a Divine Mystery

  13. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. ~~1 Peter 1: 12 [ESV]

  14. 5Jonah went out to the east side of the city and made a shelter to sit under as he waited to see what would happen to the city. 6And the Lord God arranged for a leafy plant to grow there, and soon it spread its broad leaves over Jonah’s head, shading him from the sun. This eased his discomfort, and Jonah was very grateful for the plant. ~~Jonah 4: 5-6

  15. 7But God also arranged for a worm! The next morning at dawn the worm ate through the stem of the plant so that it withered away. 8And as the sun grew hot, God arranged for a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. The sun beat down on his head until he grew faint and wished to die. “Death is certainly better than living like this!” he exclaimed. ~~Jonah 4: 7-8

  16. Scandalous Grace is always marked by pain

  17. Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry because the plant died?” “Yes,” Jonah retorted, “even angry enough to die!” ~~Jonah 4: 9

  18. Then the Lord said, “You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly. 11But Nineveh has more than 120,000* people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?” ~~Jonah 4: 10, 11

  19. Then the Lord said, “You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly. 11But Nineveh has more than 120,000* people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?” ~~Jonah 4: 10, 11 *under the age of 2
