  2. Activity #1: eggs anyone? - Observe and record how the temperature is affecting the three eggs. - Think, pair, share with your neighbour reasons for any changes to the eggs.

  3. Enzymes and temperature • Enzyme activity gradually increases with temperature until around 37ºC (body temperature) • As the temperature continues to rise, the rate of reaction falls rapidly, as heat energy denatures the enzyme.

  4. Enzyme and pH • pH can alter an enzyme’s shape. • Different enzymes work best at different pH values. For ex, intestinal enzymes have an optimum pH of about 7.5. Enzymes in the stomach have an optimum pH of about 2.

  5. Activity #2 • The test tubes all have the same protein but liquids with different pH’s: neutral, acidic, alkaline • Based on your knowledge of the digestive system, write a hypothesis.

  6. Practical • Add 1ml of starch solution and saliva to each of the 3 test tubes. • Place 1 test tube in each water bath. • Every 30 seconds, use the glass rod to remove a drop from each solution and place it on the white tile. • Add a drop of iodine to each solution, record the time of when it does not change colour • Record your results in a data table and graph.
