South-east Regional e-Research Consortium: Promoting Collaborative Research Initiatives

The South-east Regional e-Research Consortium (SeReRC) focuses on environmental science by visualizing high-resolution data, utilizing grid computing for climate models, and fostering collaborations in various disciplines. The consortium aims to enhance e-Research uptake, integrate with existing research infrastructure, and generate new collaborations. Planned activities include focus groups, working groups, workshops, and seminars to drive innovation in climate, archaeology, chemistry, and biology. SeReRC seeks to support Reading's e-Research strategy with scientific recognition for research contributions.

Introduction • Reading e-Science Centre existed since 2003 • Focus on environmental science especially; • Visualisation of hi-res model and satellite data • Grid computing for clusters running climate models • SeReRC is EPSRC Platform grant • Oxford, Reading, Southampton and RAL • Formal start June 2008 for 5 years • 4 years personnel support/`centre +PI time

The Aims of SeReRC • To increase takeup of “e-Research” within and across Consortium Institutes and SE region • Sustainable integration with institutions research infrastructure! • Benefit from complementary e-expertise • Strong focus on Research Applications • Want to initiate new collaborations between institutes in several areas! • Proposal mentions: • Climate, Archaeology, Chemistry, Quantitative Biology as early foci. Very keen to hear from other areas?

Planned Activities • Focus Groups • Application areas eg. climate, visualisation, campus grids…….. • Attendees from different institutes • Identify quick wins to improve/begin new collaborations. • Initiate Working groups • Timetable start in autumn 2008 • Working groups • Oversee use of SeReRC shared staff resources to realise Quick Win deliverables (delivery 6-9 months) • Strategic look at further Applications of e-Research • Outputs: eg. Demonstrators, New grant proposals……? • Workshops (2/yr?) • Promote x-institute collaborations • Include outside speakers • SeReRC Seminar Series • Some consolidation required • Possibility of remote participation

Summary • Reading needs an e-Research strategy! • SeReRC expects to help support that strategy! • SeReRC staff will retain an application focus and staff will aim to work on finite length projects with deliverables • SeReRC staff should expect some scientific recognition for substantial research enabling contributions of time
