  6. Romanticism • Examination of inner feelings, emotions, and use of imagination. • Mysterious, strange, and fantastic aspects of the human experience • Intense reverence for nature • Concern with the experience of the individual over the universal

  7. Realism • Interested in reaction, logic, and scientific observation • No characters that overcome the insurmountable to be heroes and save the day

  8. What it means… Dislike of realism b/c it shows humanity’s flawed nature Dislike of romanticism b/c it ignores humanity’s flawed nature

  9. Why do we have art? • The morality of art is not the material, but how well that material is used. • Think: Project Runway • Art mirrors the spectator • What do you make of the last line?

  10. Purpose of the Preface • Two-fold purpose: • Book about a painting • Writing is, in itself, an art form

  11. Homework: • Read Ch. 1-4 • TPODG study questions are shared on AMDG • How does the concept of the artist portrayed in the preface play out in the first few chapters? How is it contradicted?
