  3. The Importance of Coal • Coal was essential to the running of industry in Britain between 1830 and 1930. • It was the main fuel source in Britain at the time. • It was a major employer and thousands of people of all ages found work ‘down’ the coal mines.

  6. The Importance of Coal • A huge number of people were employed in coal mining. 1851 219,000 1881 503,900 1910 1,000,000 • As demand for coal increased, new pits were opened that went deeper than before to get as much coal as possible. • As a result the dangers faced by miners increased.

Tasks • Collect a blank map of Scotland. * Mark in the main regions in Scotland * Colour in the main coal mining areas. * Don’t forget to use a key. • Draw a bar graph to show the increase in coal production between 1830-1910. • Answer question 2 from page 10 of your work guide. • Complete the diagram on the ‘Uses For Coal’ from page 11 of your work guide.
