  1. Karen Brown Scholarship School of Social Work, Texas State University–San Marcos This scholarship has been established by the friends and colleagues of Dr. J. Karen Brown in recognition of her distinguished contributions to the TXST School of Social Work. The scholarship acknowledges Dr. Brown’s commitment to social work practice with vulnerable children and families. • Eligibility: BSW or MSW student in good standing who will be enrolled in academic year 2012-2013 • Award: one $2000 scholarship for the academic year • Basic Selection Criteria for BSW and MSW applicants: • Both BSW and MSW applicants must be formally accepted into the relevant degree program. • BSW applicants must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 for the duration of the scholarship. MSW applicants must show an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 for the duration of the scholarship. GPA must be verified by official transcript(s). • Both BSW and MSW applicants must demonstrate an intention to practice social work with vulnerable children and families through a resume and three-page essay. In addition, MSW applicants should indicate volunteer and/or work experience with this population. • Preferred Selection Criteria for BSW and MSW applicants: • Evidence of being bi-lingual in Spanish and English or working toward becoming bi-lingual; for BSW applicants, successful completion of the Spanish Language Institute for Social Work Majors counts • Evidence of financial need. • Evidence of a preference for policy practice on behalf of vulnerable children and families as demonstrated by the resume and essay. • Evidence of intention to apply for SW licensure upon graduation. • Application: Please submit a letter of interest, resume, official transcript, and essay to Ms. Hortencia Garza in the Social Work office in HPB 150 by 5pm on Monday, April 25, 2012.
