  3. Background • Hurricane Andrew • Red River Flooding • 9/11 • Hurricane Katrina

  4. Each of these events revealed entire communities or city blocks destroyed. It is extremely difficult for a community to be stabilized without its economic base. We have learned a great deal from these disasters and others affecting the economic base of a community or area.

  5. The Beginning • The Damage Assessment Call Center • Trying to find our businesses • Using GIS and Flood Maps • Closing the information loop-hitting the street

  6. Business Outreach • Economic Resilience Group (ERG) • ERG Advisory Board Key Bank State Farm Insurance APM Terminals, Port Pearce Global Partners Microsoft Corporation Economic Development Chamber of Commerce

  7. Objectives of ERG • Build a comprehensive strategy to promote private sector continuity and address needs. • Create a process for developing economic recovery strategies. • Enhance existing or build new relationships now to limit losses and facilitate the recovery process.

  8. Integrating Business into Emergency Operations Three Major Steps: • Recovery Field Teams • Damage Assessment Call Center • Business Liaison Role

Business Liaison Role • Maintains contact and conducts briefings with ERG. • Coordinates information sharing through chambers, business districts, etc. • Maintain contact with PIO to ensure inclusion of business pertinent information. • Make sure business information is included on Crisis Website. • Attend briefings and represent business.

In Conclusion • In Pierce County, 98% of our businesses employ less than 100 people, small to mid-size businesses. 98% of 22,000 businesses! • Historically, 25% of all businesses that close during a disaster never reopen. • More than 60% of businesses confronted by a major disaster close within two years. • Pierce County businesses face floods, severe weather, earthquakes, lahar, landslides, wildland fires, tsunamis and a volcano.
