Cooperative Extension Service • The Cooperative Extension Service (CES) is the outreach component of New Mexico State University; bringing research based information from the university to the people. • Every county has a CES office. • Program areas include Agriculture, Home Economics, 4-H Youth Development and Community Development

  4. A CDC study estimates 1 in 3 American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. In New Mexico, an estimated 157,930 adults have diabetes (about 10% of adults). Hispanic and Native Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have this chronic disease. (New Mexico Department of Health, 2010) Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and healthy diet. Early detection and treatment can also drastically reduce the chronic complications (Green, 2010) The research

  5. To reduce childhood obesity risk factors for 5th graders in Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Los Alamos County by: Increasing nutrition knowledge Increasing fruit and vegetable intake Increasing activity level PROGRAM GOALS

  6. The JBI program contains basic elements to reduce the risks of obesity for children. JBI Program

  7. NUTRITION & FITNESS FIELD TRIP CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION PARENT OUTREACH DELIVERY METHODS

  8. Nutrition & Fitness Field Trip Students participate in four 45-minute workshops. Each workshop is aligned to the New Mexico Health Education Standards and Benchmarks. Approximately 4,000 students have participated in the Nutrition and Fitness Field Trip in the six years it has taken place.

  9. Just Be It! Jeopardy • Provides introduction to day’s activities. • Introduces students to nutrition concepts they will be learning during the day. • Questions reinforce concepts asked on the pre and post test.

  10. Field Trip Evaluation Results Validity and reliability for the nutrition knowledge test was established. The test has 16 multiple choice questions.

Classroom Instruction • Approximately 10-12 Sessions • Evaluation • Pre and Post Knowledge Gain Tests • Pre and Post Behavior Change Tests • JBI curriculum is aligned to State of NM Public Education Department Content Standards and Benchmarks for Health and Physical Education Almost 2,200 students have participated in the JBI classroom instruction in the five years it has taken place.

  14. Building MyPyramid This activity teaches students to categorize foods into the five food groups.

  15. What is a Healthy Fast Food Choice? Students participating in a Fast Food Consumer Decision Making activity.

  16. How Diabetes Affects the Body Students “experience” some of the potential complications that may occur if diabetes is not controlled.
