Enhancing the Department of Computer Science's Web-Based Publication and Grant Management System

This project aims to develop an effective web-based system for displaying Computer Science faculty publications and grants. Current static webpages hinder data accessibility and filtering, adversely affecting outreach to prospective graduate students and faculty. The proposed solution includes features such as search and sort options by author, keyword, and year, as well as options for faculty and students to upload papers and make corrections. Additionally, we will automate data collection from various academic publication databases to streamline updates and enhance the visibility of our research.

Problem • Both publications data and grant data for Dept of CS are manually entered, static pages • Static web page does not allow for filtering • Poor advertisement of our current research to prospective grad students and faculty • Pages are still accessible, but no longer linked on CS front page

Proposed Project - Part 1 • Suggested things to include • search by author, keyword • sort by year, publication type, keyword, author • allow faculty/students to upload papers, make corrections • allow thumbnail image next to each paper • Dealing with tech reports • generate and assign CS tech report numbers • prepare a nice front page for CS tech reports and place in front of a paper, given a PDF • Generate RSS feed of newly added/published papers that could be displayed on the ODU CS web site

Proposed Project - Part 2 • Manual entry is a pain • it's easier to correct bad entries than enter all data from scratch • Mine various academic publication web sites and build a database of publications for all ODU-CS faculty • ACM Digital Library • IEEE Xplore • Google Scholar • Microsoft Academic Search • I have a MS student who has done some of the publication mining already and who could be a resource • Script would run once/week to search for new publications • could also signup for email alerts from Google Scholar
