  1. One World Running

  2. Backround Information • Founded in 1986 by Mike Sandrock • Locations are all through out the United States and Canada. • There headquarters are in Boulder, Colorado

  3. What we do • We collect and wash shoes. Send the shoes to Africa. • We also collect t-shirts, shorts, medicine, school, art suppliesand have recently added baseball and soccer equipment to One World Running.

  4. Mission Statement • One World Running is an international program promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world.

  5. About One World Running • Shoes are dropped off at local running stores, and a Boulder laundry, Community Plaza, donates the washing – but you can always wash the shoes before shipping them to us, in cold water and air dried (as the dryer can melt the glue, as we found out!) Shipping has been tight recently, as the airlines have cut back on their donations. Now called One World Running, we are a Colorado non-profit organization with federal 501-c-3 tax-exempt status. Each $195 raised is sufficient to send roughly 50 pairs of shoes to sub-Saharan Africa (or double that amount of shoes to Haiti and Central America). The majority of the shoes come from individuals, and from running clubs or Girl Scout troops (for example) that put on shoe drives. Some of the shoes are new; many are “near-new,” which are the ones sent overseas. The shoes that are beat up and not suitable for shipment are sent to Nike in Beaverton, Ore., through Boulder’s Eco-Cycle program, to be ground up and made into running tracks and playgrounds through the Reuse-a-Shoe program.

  6. Events • CLIMBING: Roger Briggs and Jim Erickson • TRIATHLON: Simon Lessing • CYCLING: Marianne Martin • RUNNING: Lorraine Moller • The inaugural class of 2011 included: • CLIMBING: LAYTON KOR: legendary climber, now in his 70s, pioneer of first ascents. • TRIATHLON: Six-time Ironman champion and triathlon pioneer DAVE SCOTT, longtime Boulder resident, considered one of the greatest ever. • CYCLING: Gold medalist Connie Carpenter and Tour de France stage winner Davis Phinney. • RUNNING: Frank Shorter, “the man who invented running,” credited with spurring the “running boom” with his 1972 gold medal victory. • SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD: Dan Creedon, long-time Daily Camera sports editor who was instrumental in promoting events such as the Red Zinger, Coors Classic and the Bolder Boulder. Key behind the scenes person in making • Boulder the athletic center it is.

  7. Shoes for Recruits • Military recruits prior to departure to recruit training, are encouraged to begin the process of physical fitness and conditioning months prior to the departure date. These courageous, young men and women have volunteered to join the U.S. Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force, or Coast Guard during the current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, some of these recruits come from households that lack the financial means to provide basic running shoes that would enable them to start an effective training program.
