Strategic Planning and Budgeting AIS NSW IT Managers Conference May 29, 2013 Jeff Mao
Introductionsa bit about yourselfwhat you hope to get done todaya random fact about yourself
Today's plan • What is strategic planning? • (at least according to Jeff) • Can you, as independent schools, plan together? • To what end? Why? • role for AIS NSW? • "Build the model"
Why strategic planning? • Answers some fundamental questions: • What do we do? • For whom? • How and what makes us different? • Allows leaders to lead and followers to follow • Gives you a basis for making decisions: • Educational • Political • Technological • Financial
Draw-See-Think-Plan • Draw - what do you envision as the end-state? • See - What do you see today? What sits between your current scenario and your end-state? • Think - What do you need to do to bridge the gap? • Plan - What resources will be needed to get this done?
Draw: What do you envision is the end-state? • Vision • Idealized • Future focused • Long term • BHAG • Mission • What do we do? • For whom? • How? • Values • These things, we believe...
See: What do you see today? What sits between your current scenario and your end-state? • Educational? • Financial? • Technological? • Political? • What's coming? • ??? The million dollar question...???
Think: What do you need to do to bridge the gap? • What do we need to do first? Last? In the middle? • Ignore (to some extent) "reality" • Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough
Plan: What resources will be needed to get this done? • Time? Money? People? Technology? • Be prepared to change this as the world changes around you!
Can you, as independent schools, plan together? • To what end? Why? • Role for AIS NSW? • What else?
