What do you notice? • Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263). • Wordsworth stated that romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263). • One famous poet described poetry in the romantic era as a kind of outpouring of emotions (Wordsworth 263).
MLA In-Text Citations • The last name of the author and the page number that the material came from are the two essential parts of an in-text citation. They usually go inside parentheses at the end of the sentence. • If the author’s last name has already been included in the sentence, just the page number can go in the parentheses. • Paraphrasing, though it is NOT quoting material word for word, still needs to be cited.
Practice • Let’s pretend that this is a quote from page 173 of a book I wrote about teaching: “Every student deserves coffee and donuts on a Monday morning.” • Some of you write a sentence that quotes me where both name and page number are in the parentheses. • Some of you write a sentence that quotes me where the name appears earlier in the sentence and only the page number goes in the parentheses. • Some of you write a sentence that paraphrases my quote and properly cites me.
