  2. Brief History of Rome • Rome was founded in 625 BC • Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. • The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC - almost 500 years. In comparison the United States of America only exist since 1776 - less than 250 years. • The collapse was completed when Rome itself was conquered by the Visigoth Odoacer and his men in the year AD 476.

  3. Rome is the capital of Italy. It is the largest and most populous city in Italy. It is located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber river.

  4. Locals refer to the city as Roma. The currency there is known as the Euro. The language spoken is Italian. It is in the Central European Time Zone.

  5. Made up of a lot of farm land. Most people live near or can see a river from their window. There are temples and shops located in the center of all of the forums. These cities and towns had little space between one another and living conditions are very different from ours.

  6. Roman Economy • As in ancient times Rome is a center of transportation. It is the focus of international traffic by road, rail, sea, and air and is as well a cultural, religious, political, and commercial center of international importance. • The city is also a center of banking, insurance, printing, publishing, and fashion. • The economy of Rome depends to a very large extent on the tourist trade.

  7. Population:2,654,187 (men 47 %; women 53 %)

  8. Climate • Common misconception that the climate in Rome is Mediterranean. • In winter the temperatures are warmer due to the sea. • Summer temperatures along the coast are cooler than inland due to the influence of the sea as well. • Snow is extremely rare but rain is very common. Also temperatures do drop and it may get very cold.

  9. Landmarks and Attractions • The Colosseum • The Golden House of Nero • St. Peters Basilica • Trevi Fountain • Roman attractions are some of the few great treasures of the world. Where else can you walk through a papal palace, see an Egyptian obelisk, and stroll streets as old as the time of Jesus?
