How to train your dog to be a service dog

Daily practice and exercise are two of the most important components of your dog's success when learning new skills. Every dog is different with how much mental and physical stimulation they are able to absorb on any given day. For most dogs, we recommend a minimum of 25 minutes to 1 hour of daily practice and at least one hour of daily exercise. It is often most beneficial for the dog to have several short, yet purposely devoted practice sessions and exercise spread throughout the course of their day. If you do not continue with these activities daily (even after the completion of the training program), your dog's behaviors will likely regress. For more information please visit: www.ckdogs.com

  1. Our 4 original trainers: Gemma Soberano, David Burry, Ashley O’Hara, and Jennifer Kolar, all volunteered together at a non-profit service dog organization.

  2. As volunteers working with in-training service dogs in public, they received numerous requests from individuals wanting their own personal dogs trained.

  3. An idea began to develop to start a company with various types of dog training. In 2012, Compass Key (formerly PAWS Training Centers) locations began in Wilmington, NC with Gemma, WA with Jennifer.

  4. Although they had initially thought the majority of clients would want obedience training, they quickly realized the great need for service dog training for privately owned dogs.
