  4. Prevalence of Autism Autism is fairly common, occurring in about 1/88 children. It is more common in boys than girls. In other countries, rates vary from around 1/100 to 1/1000. Autism rates in the United States have been on the rise. This can be attributed to two things: 1. A rise in autism due to environmental factors such as pollution and living conditions. 2. More cases of autism being diagnosed. With better diagnostic tools, more children with autism get diagnosed. In the past, they may have not gotten a diagnosis of autism.

  5. Technologies and TreatmentsHelping autistic people Technology can be used to aid autistic people. Technologies such as iPods can help students with autism with the following: • Organization • Keeping track of time • Socially (making friends and communicating) • Technology can also help students control their speech patterns, with the help of games or other activities. Visual references help keep autistic children on track. • ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) can be used to increase or decrease the frequency of behavior in an autistic child.
