  4. Chicoutimi, QC Chicoutimicomes from the original term Shkoutimeou which means the end of deep waters. A fitting name of a region located and developed at the meeting of two rivers: Saguenay River and Chicoutimi River.

Chicoutimi, QC • 1976 • The city of Chicoutimi was first created through the municipal amalgamations of neighbouring towns: • Chicoutimi-Nord and Rivière-du-Moulin. • 2002 • Chicoutimi was amalgamated into the new city of Saguenay • Saguenay is a city created from the amalgamation of the three largest municipalities in the Saguenay region: Jonquière, Chicoutimi, and La Baie

Chicoutimi, QC • Naming of Saguenay: • A new Identity • To avoid dividing the people by suggesting that their cities be annexed into the central city instead of an equal amalgamation, citizens were allowed to vote on the name of the new city: Chicoutimi, Chicoutimi-Jonquière and Ville (de) Saguenay. • Saguenay was chosen because it was not specific to any of the amalgamated cities and therefore a good choice for a community born out of the synergy of amalgamated municipalities. • Contrary to the cases of Montreal and Gatineau.

Chicoutimi, QC • 1676 – Area first settled • 1782– Chicoutimi becomes a town • 1842– Chicoutimi established as a city • 1898 – Chicoutimi’s first pulp mill established • 1957 – Hydroelectric station established • 1969 – University of Quebec at Chicoutimi established • 1983 – Chicoutimi Pulp Mill site granted historical monument status • 2002– City of Chicoutimi disestablished, amalgamated as a borough into the city of Saguenay

Chicoutimi, QC • Events of the past shaped today’s borough of Chicoutimi • Peoples actions and reactions to events such as: • Increased population – led to change from town to city and the need for more resources • Industrial expansion – created jobs and led to the industrialization of the city’s landscape and lifestyle • Great Depression – led to the closing of the city’s main mills, caused a shift towards a more administrative and commercial economy • Establishment of the University – made Chicoutimi a place of education and research

Chicoutimi, QC • Economy of Chicoutimi: • Once a thriving industrial city built on Quebec's lumber and pulp industry • Why Chicoutimi? • natural resources: water and wood • ease of transportation • Since the discovery of a method of manufacturing mechanical pulp, the pulp became a sign of wealth • Pulp accounts for a significant part in the production of newsprint

Chicoutimi, QC Pulperie de Chicoutimi/ Pulp Mill of Chicoutimi (est. 1898): • By 1910, the Pulperie had risen to the forefront of pulp production in Canada • Exported to New York and Europe, exporting 3/4 of pulp used by the largest English paper • Beginning in 1921, business started to slow down, prices started to drop, and the Pulperie came to a permanent close in 1930

Chicoutimi, QC • Today, the Pulperie is: • a cultural heritage site: • 1983: officially granted a historical monument status by the federal and provincial governments • a mandate to restore and preserve the premises • turned museum • a hydroelectric station • was largely used in making pulp and paper • still running • only a few structures from the pulp and paper industry are left • They serve as a physical reminder of Chicoutimi's industry, and houses its material and cultural history
