  1. The Expository Essay A Momentous Event

  2. The Prompt • Life is full of momentous events that change the course of our futures. These events may occur because of a decision that someone makes or because of uncontrollable circumstances. • Describe a momentous event in your life and explain how it affected your future in a multiple-paragraph short essay.

  3. Expository is Explaining • Many of the essays you write are designed to explain something. In this case, you’ll be asked to explain the ways in which an important event affected your future. • Here are a few examples from my own life...

  4. I learned to play music.

  5. I went to college. Three time!

  6. I got married.

  7. Now it’s your turn. Choose three potential events that you think have affected your life in significant ways. Write each in the column titled “An Event.”

  8. So, how did these events shape your future? • Here are mine...

  9. I started playing music in elementary school. I first learned to play the sax and later picked up a little piano. • I continued up and through college and auditioned at many colleges. (I almost majored in music in college). • I played in a few bands too.

  10. I got my associates degree in Arts at BCC. • I majored in English at GCU, and that led to my Teaching. I still teach today. (Duh). • I later attended RU (currently there) to obtain my Masters in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Design. • I moved away from home for the first time and had to become responsible for paying my own mortgage.

  11. Umm... I’m freakin’ married.

  12. Again, your turn. Start to fill out your own chart with the potential affects of each of these events. This will help you figure out what you might want to write about.
