  3. A LITTLE CONTEXT … Matthew 23 – Rebuke Sin leads to judgment. Matthew 24 – Prediction Judgment leads to warning. Matthew 25 – Parable

  4. Wise & Foolish Matthew 25:1-2 • There are two possible responses to Jesus’ warnings. • For the purposes of this parable, the distinction is not “good and evil,” but rather “wise and foolish.”

  5. LAMPS WITHOUT OIL Matthew 25:3-4 • What did the fools do wrong? • What did the wise do right?

  6. ALL SLEPT Matthew 25:5 • All ten virgins fall asleep. • All of them wait. • None of them are ready. • Some of them are prepared.

  7. Loss Matthew 25:6-10 • With suddenness, the bridegroom arrives. • The time of preparation is past. • They miss the joy for which they waited.

  8. WHAT NOW? Matthew 25:11-12 • Unprepared = Unknown • Being unprepared does not just make you a fool, it makes you uninvited.

  9. TWO MEANINGS Matthew 25:13 • Just as chapter 24 had two predictions, chapter 25 has two warnings. • For Jesus – Israel was waiting for its hope, but unprepared for its arrival. • For Matthew – The church was waiting for its hope, but unprepared for its arrival.

  10. The Crimes of Jesus of Nazareth THE FIFTH CHARGE He told us we were unprepared for our fondest hope.
