The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro • created in 1920 by the union of 3 schools: the Medical School (founded in 1808), the Polytechnic School (created in 1810), and the Law School (established in 1891) • reorganized in 1937 as University of Brazil: 15 Faculties • present name (1965): The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro University Hospital Center of Letters and Arts and Rectory

Pedro II) Rectory and its entrance hall • The UFRJ has 3 campuses: Cidade Universitária, Praia Vermelha and Macaé (a fourth campus will be set up in Xerém, a city about 40 minutes away from Rio); • There are other institutes, faculties, and units outside the campuses such as the IFCS (Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences), the National Museum; the Valongo Observatory; the Law School; the Music School, the Laboratory School etc. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

  5. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro • Praia Vermelha: the university oldest campus. It was a hospital for the mentally ill and in 1949 the space was donated to the UFRJ. It is placed in one of the most beautiful sites of Rio de Janeiro, quite near the Sugarloaf (many academic unitis of the Center of Juridical and Economic Sciences and of the Center of Philosophy and Human Sciences are placed there)

COPPE The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Ocean Basin • the third largest and deepest ocean basin in the world; • operative since 2003; • designed to carry out tests of structures and equipments used in the exploration and production of oil and gas offshore. • the ocean basin simulates the ocean enviroment making it possible to study the behaviour of structures and equipments in profound waters (up to 3000 metres).

Evaluation of the Brazilian Higher Education Institutions (IES): CAPES (Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) • CAPES plays a very significant role in the expansion and consolidation of graduate courses (master and doctorate) throughout the Brazilian territory; • CAPES has a system to evaluate the academic excelence of Master’s and Doctoral courses in Brazil; • CAPES assigns grades from 3 to 7 (55% of the UFRJ courses scored above the national average – 5, 6 and 7). • CAPES also takes part in the elaboration of the international scientific cooperation and development policy • It has a Thesis Database to make it easier the acces of scientific information. The database is part of CAPES Portal de Periódicos.(www.periodicos.capes.gov.br)

R&D Partners in the UFRJ campuses • CENPES/Petrobrás (Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello Research and Development Center): created to meet technological demands of Petrobrás (the largest research center within a Latin-American university); • CEPEL(Electrical Energy Research Center): created to provide a research center for energy companies; • CETEM(Mineral Technology Center): one of the research institutes of the Technology and Science Ministry (MCT) created to foster technological development on sustainable use of non-renewable resources; • IEN(Institute of Nuclear Engineering): holds and operates an experimental nuclear reactor for the development of peaceful applications; • CBPF(Brazilian Center for Physics Research): one of the research institutes of the Technology and Science Ministry (MCT) which aims to develop graduate activities on theoretical and experimental Physics.
