Chemicals in Tobacco Smoke • Tar is a dark sticky substance that forms when tobacco burns. • Tar makes cilia clump together so they can’t prevent harmful materials from getting into the lungs. • Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. • Carbon monoxide takes the place of much needed oxygen in blood cells. • Nicotine is a stimulant drug that increases activities of the nervous system and heart. • It increases the speed of your heart beat and increases blood pressure. • It is the addictive substance in tobacco smoke.

Health Problems • Bronchitis is an irritation of the breathing passages in which the small passages become narrower than normal and may be clogged with mucus. • Emphysema destroys lung tissue and causes breathing difficulties. • People with emphysema do not get enough oxygen and they cannot eliminate carbon dioxide properly. • Lung Cancer is caused by tumors (cancerous growths) in the lungs that take away space used for gas exchange. • There are over 50 different chemicals that cause cancer in tobacco smoke.

  4. Passive Smoking • Passive Smoking is also known as second hand smoke. • This occurs when people involuntary inhale cigarette smoke due to others in their environment smoking. • People who inhale tobacco smoke suffer from the same diseases as those who smoke voluntarily.
