  1. Junction: A place or point where two roads or tracks meet.

  2. Chinese workers played a big part in completing the railroad.

  3. Almost 2,000 Chinese men were killed or injured by blasting accidents, avalanches, cholera, or harsh winter storms..

  4. Cholera: An infectious disease caused by contaminated water of food.

  5. John Wesley Powell will explore the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869.

  6. Cataracts: A furious rush of river water.

  7. The expedition ran into many cataracts on the rivers, breaking oars and damaging boats.

  8. Abandon: to leave completely and finally

  9. The expedition had to abandon much of their equipment by the river because it was damaged.

  10. Sustain: To supply with food and other necessities of life.

  11. Native Americans tried to sustain themselves and preserve their culture against great odds.

  12. Butch Cassidy (bottom right) and the Wild Bunch robbed many banks and trains throughout the west. Butch was born and raised in central and southern Utah.
