  5. Purpose Of Artificial Selection • High Yields • Improved quality • Reduced production costs • Faster growth rates • Greater resistance to diseases

  6. Examples Of Artificial Selection • Internationally: Cereal hydridisation Eg. rice http://www.agripinoy.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/hybrid-rice2.jpg

  7. International Examples Continued • Brassica oleracea http://campus.udayton.edu/~INSS/Dillon230/WebUNIT-III/2ArtificialSelection-cabbage_files/image002.gif

  8. Regional Examples • Jamaica: Jamaica Red Poll, Jamaica Hope -Cross breeding of Indian, European breeds of cattle with local creole cattle. -Allowed beef and dairy herds capable of handling heat stress, poor pasture, disease resistant , higher production of milk and yields than the local creole cattle by itself.

  9. Other Regional Examples • Trinidad: Buffalypso --Egs. of desired traits: efficient digestive system, resistance to disease, strength, breeding and reproductive habits. • Barbados: Sugarcane --Egs. of desired traits: amount of solids in juice, number of canes per stool, sweetness of juice, early ripening, cane length and thickness etc… Refer to hand out for more info. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_53XVCwmmVIQ/R_JlWxW20-I/AAAAAAAAA1w/6sbeMW5vbjA/Buff001.jpg http://www.vacation-in-barbados.com/image-files/the-island-barbados-sugar-cane.jpg
