  2. Parts of Speech • Grammatically speaking, the verb (V) is the action in the sentence. • The subject (S) is the doer of the action. • The direct object (DO) is the recipient of the action. • To determine the DO, ask: what? Or who? Is being “verbed”

  3. Examples of DOs in English • I called Emily yesterday. • He sent the letter. • We ate the pizza. S V DO S V DO S V DO

  4. Examples of DOPs in English • We use pronouns to avoid repetition. • I called Emily yesterday. • I called her yesterday. • He sent the letter. • He sent it. • We ate the pizza. • We ate it. S V DOP S V DOP S V DOP

  5. How they work in Spanish… • In Spanish, the direct object pronouns are placed IN FRONT OF the conjugated verb (which is still conjugated based on the subject). • However, in a 2-verb situation, you can place the direct object pronoun before the conjugated verb, or attach it to the end of the infinitive. • (DOPs can also be placed at the end on gerunds or commands, but we won´t be seeing these this quarter).
