  1. Pure Substances and Mixtures review

  2. Question 1 You are given two things to observe. The first is an ice cube and the second is small puddle of water which is equivalent to the amount of water used to make the ice cube. The amount of space occupied by the puddle is greater than that of the ice cube. Explain this phenomenon.

  3. Question 2 Make a neat, labelled and detailed diagram for each of the following: A mixture of Jello powder mixed into water. A mixture of sesame seed oil and water.

  4. Question 3 Let’s say that you put a small pot of water on the stove to bring to a boil. Above the water sits some air that was inevitably trapped under the lid once you closed the pot. Explain both in words and with the use of a diagram what you believe occurs at the atomic level in the air particles in order for the pot cover to begin rattling once the water begins to boil.

  5. Question 4 As we learned in our first unit, some substances are soluble in one solvent but not in another. Using your knowledge of solutions and mechanical mixtures, explain why this is so.
