ESF Standing Committee for the Humanities (SCH) • Anthropology • Archaeology • Art and Art History • Classical Studies • History • History and Philosophy of Science • Literature and Literary Studies • Languages and Philologies • Linguistics • Music and Musicology • Oriental and African Studies • Pedagogical and Educational Research • Philosophy • Psychology • Religion and Theology • SCH defines its scope by traditional disciplinesand related methodologies • Engaged in newly-structured, broad fields of study – e.g. Cultural and Media Studies • Contributing to the development of emerging, trans-disciplinary research areas – e.g. Cognitive Science; Digital Humanities; Health and Welfare Research

Currently, the SCH focuses on: • Fostering interdisciplinary research • Focusing on the role of Humanities research in addressing Grand Challenges at a global scale • Taking a leading and integrating role in facilitating the development of European strategy for Research Infrastructures in the Humanities (Strategic Workshop October 2010 - high interaction with computer sciences --> PESC represented through PEER project) PESC Plenary Meeting, Dubrovnik, 19 April 2011

Collaboration with EMRC, LESC, PESC and SCSS is sought. • Conference“Global Humanities – Innovation and the Global Dimension of Research”, with a special emphasis on: • how to facilitate international collaboration • and interdisciplinary research • how to address the Grand Challenges   PESC Plenary Meeting, Dubrovnik, 19 April 2011

Fostering interdisciplinarity: the future • TheSummer School onGrand Challenges and Interdisciplinarity aims to: • enhance awareness for bridging disciplines and research domains • address questions as to how to educate young researchers in interdisciplinary communication and work • address issues of sharing implicit knowledge and formal organizational barriers • Suggested topic for 2012 Summer School: Water: The Past, The Present and The Future PESC Plenary Meeting, Dubrovnik, 19 April 2011
