  4. «THE STATUE OF LIBERTY» • At the entrance of New York Harbor there’ s • the colossal Statue of Liberty. It stands on Liberty • Island near Ellis Island, the arrival point for • European immigrants. Since 1886 the Statue • of Liberty has symbolized America as a symbol • of freedom for people all over the world. • Its complete name is LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING • THE WORLD. • The statue was the work of French sculptor Frederic August • e Bartholdi. He started his work in France and worked 10 years at it. • Then the statue was taken to pieces and shipped across the Atlantic • as a gift from France to the people of the United States of America. • The Statue of Liberty is made of bronze. It is 93 metres high. It represents • a woman holding a torch of fire in her right hand. The book that • Liberty holds in her left hand symbolizes the Declaration of Independence. Sculptor Bartholdi combined elements of the Egyptian pyramids with his mother’s face to create the statue. • The Statue of Liberty was formally opened on the 28th of October, 1886 in honor of the United States’ 100th birthday. On the tablet within are inscribed the last five lines of a sonnet “The New Colossus” by • Emma Lazarus, a daughter of Jewish immigrants from Russia:

  8. “MOUNT RUSHMORE” • The black Hills of South Dakota are famous for the beauty of their nature. Here stand the Mount Rushmore Memorial. This memorial began in 1925.Gutson Borglum- famous American sculptor built the heads of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Rooswelt. These gigantic heads are eighteen metres high carved out granite and are visible for over eighty kilometers.

Дуэйн Робинсон, летописец Южной Дакоты, предложил вырубить из горы статуи легендарных покорителей гор- Джима Бриджера, Джона Колтера и Кита Карсона. Проект этот создавался для привлечения туристов. Но в конце концов был принят другой проект: статуи самых популярных президентов США - Джорджа Вашингтона, Томаса Джефферсона, Авраама Линкольна и Теодора Рузвельта, которого приняли лишь потому, чтобы показать талант скульптора, сделав его лицо с очками. • В 1927 году скульптор ГатсонБорглум принял этот заказ. Ему он посвятил остаток своей жизни. • Естественно, этот проект был не первым. До этого в Египте был построен Большой Сфинкс, а также статуи фараонов в пустыне Гиза. Также был высечен другой проект на Горе Конфедератов. Но остался еще и незаконченный проект: Вождь индейцев сиу- Генри Стоящий медведь.   10. THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT • There are many statues of George Washington in the capital of the USA, but the most principal monument is a simple obelisk, 170 metres high. It is made of the white marble. This monument is called “THE PENCIL” • The national landmark stands in memory of the father of the country, • the 1st President of a new republic. It was erected in 1885. There are words on it: • “First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

  11. THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL • The Jefferson Memorial is a light and beautiful in design building, surrounded by a wider circle of cherry trees. These trees are presented by Japan to the people of the USA. It was opened in 1943 and devoted to the multi-talented man – architect, inventor, diplomat, author of the nation’s “Declaration of Independence” and the 3rd President of the USA.
