The Atlantic Slave Trade

The Atlantic Slave Trade, spanning from around 1500 to 1870, led to the forced importation of nearly a million Africans to the Americas. Europeans sought cheap labor for plantations after the decline of the encomienda system, which resulted in the death of many Native Americans. They turned to enslaved Africans, who were seen as more resilient to disease and experienced in agriculture. The Middle Passage, fraught with horrific conditions, saw high mortality rates among captives. The legacy of this trade includes immense suffering and societal upheaval.
