  1. Political Action CommitteesA key element of a successful political and grassroots program

  2. Why PACs? • PACs get members personally involved in the political process • PACs provide a tool for an industry to pool resources and leverage them with a unified voice in the political arena • PACs open doors for members and staff to build lasting relationships with candidates • It’s (almost) all about money!!

  3. Building the war chest • The success of a political action committee begins and ends with member involvement. • The basics--What’s ANLA-PAC doing? • Direct Mail • Electronic Solicitations (emails, ANLA-PAC Web-site) • Regular communications from staff and volunteer leaders about PAC and political activities • Member to member • Special events (ever seen Dave Fujino in a hula skirt??)

  4. The Power of People • Leveraging successful fundraising based on the good reputation of industry leaders

  5. J. Guy Leads by example Enthusiasm is contagious Rarely takes no for an answer!

  6. Peter Orum Epitomizes American dream People admire him, enjoy being around him Committed to the cause of political action

  7. Power of Partnerships • ANLA-PAC partnered in 2006 with local members and state associations to support candidates essential to immigration reform • Working in partnership allowed us to do much more than would have been possible working alone • Examples…

  8. Mike DeWine (R-OH) • Key Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee • Supporter of ANLA’s top issues • Tough Race ANLA-PAC Partnered with Local OH members and the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association for an event that raised approximately $16,000 This was a Nursery and Landscape Industry Only event.

  9. Arlen Specter (R-PA) • Chair of Senate Judiciary Committee and key member of the Senate Appropriations Committee • Shepherded legislation through Senate on Comprehensive Immigration Reform The Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association, in conjunction with ANLA-PAC raised more than $17,500 for Chairman Specter. This event was timed perfectly for Senate action on immigration issue

  10. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) • Member of Senate Judiciary Committee This maverick conservative has been a visionary and courageous leader on immigration reform. J. Guy, ANLA-PAC, and South Carolina Nursery & Landscape Association raised almost $30,000 in “an event to remember”

  11. Other Special & Local Events • Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) - $37,000 • Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) - $30,000 toward a California event that raised >$100,000 • In each of these cases the ANLA-PAC, in working with ANLA members, took the lead in raising these contributions. In each case, the nursery and landscape industry was extremely successful in building even more sustainable relationships with these Members of Congress.

  12. Keys to Success of a PAC • Organization • Enthusiasm of staff and volunteer leadership • Commitment of Association Leadership
