  1. Endangered Species Act By: Amanda, Lura, Zack and Annie (This is a fictitious endangered species plan for the year 2055.)

  2. N.C. 2055 • The environment in 2055 is very polluted. • Beaches will be more eroded and will be drier. • Water is starting to become more salty and acidic • Global warming is heating the planet. • If that weren't enough the Brine Shrimp are dying!!

  3. Breeding In Captivity • Breeding in captivity helps prevent any bad outside forces. • Also, breeding the brine shrimp allows breeders to control their environment. • We will breed the brine shrimp with 30 ppt salt, 6 ppt fertilizer, and a pH of 8. The water will be room temperature.

  4. Monitoring • To monitor the population size, we will go out into an ocean in a boat. • Out in the brine shrimp’s natural environment, we take various samples from various places. • Counting the number of shrimp in each sample for a number of years, we can estimate the population size.

  6. Where are the Shrimp? • Brine shrimp can be found in salt lakes and brine ponds around the world. • They also can tolerate extreme environmental changes.

  7. Brine Shrimp Food Chain • The brine shrimp eat algae and detritus. • Flies also eat detritus. • Birds, primarily seagulls, eat the shrimp. • When the shrimp decay, they provide energy for the algae

  8. What do we test for in the water? • pH • Dissolved Oxygen • Salinity • Temperature • Sediment • Oil • Other Pollutants

  9. Laws Protecting Brine Shrimp • The Laws protecting Brine Shrimp now are the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. • However, the law enforcement for these laws are not nearly enough. We need more enforcement for them. • We need to require less pollution in the water, so that the shrimp can live in a less acidic and polluted environment.

  10. What Technology Helps • We hope that cloning will help replenish the brine shrimp population. • We will also use monitors to measure the climate and conditions that the brine shrimp are living in (captivity and wild).

What YOU need to Know • To help keep the brine shrimp alive, YOU need to stop any polluting or littering in your area. • You need to help save the brine shrimp because without them, the whole food chain would be messed up. Since brine shrimp are on the bottom of the food chain, they are the base of all living things in that food chain.
