  2. President • Head of executive branch • Most powerful leader in the world • Qualifications (Constitutional) • 35 yrs old • Native-born American • Resident of the US

  3. Characteristics • Most have been white • All have been males • All but one was Protestant Christian • JFK was Catholic • Most were college educated • Many were lawyers

  4. Elections • Every 4 years • Divisible by 4 • 2000, 2004, 2008, etc., • No direct vote • Electoral college • Each state’s # of HOR + Senate • 538 total electoral votes • (Washington DC has 3) • Winner take all • Winner must receive

  5. Candidate must receive 270 to win • HOR votes if there is a tie • (happened twice, 1800 & 1824) • Actual electoral vote is held in Dec.

  6. Term • 4 yr term • 22nd Amd. limits to 2 terms • 10 yrs if it began during another pres. Term • Salary • $400,000/yr • Money for travel & expenses • Lives & works in White House • Camp David in MD mountains as a retreat

  7. VP and Succession • VP elected with Pres. Through electoral college • Constitution gives VP little power • Presides over Senate • Votes only to break tie • Succeeds Pres if he dies or falls ill

  8. Presidential Succession Act (1947) • Set up succession after VP • Speaker of the house • President Pro Tempore • Secretary of State • 25th Amd. • VP becomes Pres. If something happens • Also chooses the VP to replace him
