Resume A resume should only take 30-45 seconds to tell the reader who you are, how to contact you, and why they should interview you for the job! • Introducing Yourself • The first section of your resume is personal information. • Include: Full Name, address, phone number, and e-mail. • Objective • This is a brief statement indicating the position you are applying for.
Resume A “general” resume is not the most effective way of getting you an interview. Custom build yours to each job! • Education • List the name of the school you are currently attending and include your expected date of graduation. • Work/Volunteer Experience • Your work/volunteer experience should be listed in reverse chronological order. • This means begin with the most recent work experience!
Resume A resume should be one page long. Keep things to a minimum. • Skills • In this section you will list specific skills, knowledge, special training, computer knowledge, and fluency in foreign languages. • Other Possible Sections: • Honors and Awards • Activities/Organizations • Leadership • Hobbies • Summary of qualifications

Interviewing skills and Etiquette An interview is a formal meeting between you (the job seeker) and the employer. • Make sure that you are ready and mentally prepared for the interview. • First, do your homework. Learn something about the employer. • Have a positive attitude! • Arrive early! • Make sure you shake hands firmly. • Make eye contact!

Interviewing skills and Etiquette • Sit up straight. • Listen carefully to the questions you are asked. • Answer honestly and with confidence. • Prepare questions to ask your interviewer(s). • Thank your interviewer(s) for their time.
Applications Make sure you have all the necessary information to be able to fill out a job application. • Important Numbers to Know • Social Security Number (SSN) • Phone Numbers: Of past employers and references • Addresses of past jobs (At least the name and city) • Dates: Past employment, education • Employment History • Name of employer • Job titles and duties • Location of job • And reason for leaving
Applications Some job locations will still give you a paper application, but most job applications are online now! • Educational History • Name of schools and locations • Number of years you attended • “Release agreement: allowed to call people, credit reports, etc. ; “I hereby certify” statements and signature • Other questions asked: • Legal right to work • Criminal record • How did you hear about the job?
Thank You letters • Only about 5% of applicants ever send a thank you letter. • Most employers will be shocked and impressed to receive any letter at all.
Work Permits • What is a work permit? • A work permit is a legal document required by the state of California that allows a person under 18 years of age to hold a job. • If you are between the ages of 14-17, you must get a work permit in order to work. • What hours can I work? • The hours vary from district to district. • How do I get one? • Career Center at your high school Work Permits: Are you between the ages of 14-17?

Activity!!! • Get into a group of 4 or 5 people. Choose among yourselves a particular position. One person will be the interviewer and another will be the interviewee. The other will be the observer/notetaker. Interviewer and observers will be able to ask the interviewee questions. Interviewee must be asked at least 3 questions. Take turns until everyone has been interviewed.
