This Day in History 1964- China detonated its first atomic bomb. 1973- Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, who negotiated a cease-fire in the Vietnam War, were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize; Tho declined the award. 2002- President George W. Bush signed a congressional resolution authorizing war against Iraq. Current Event Five things to watch for in Tuesday's debate How well candidates connect with audience members could affect outcome Obama must overcome passive first performance without overdoing it Women's issues are one area Obama must exploit if he wants to maintain their support Strong debate will result in flood of contributions, much needed in stretch run ad blitz. Watch out for the wild card- literally anything is on the table for discussion. This Day in History and Current Events

Five Major factors often identified as causes of World War I (but not causes of U.S. entry) Militarism- policy of military preparedness and building up of weapons Alliances- an association to further the common interests of the members. Imperialism- the extension or imposition of power, authority, or influence Nationalism- loyalty and devotion to a nation Events or Economics- A spark that ignites the flame or the haves versus the have nots.

Chronological Path to War June 1914- War Starts August 1914- U.S. declares neutrality February 1915- Germany declares war zone around Great Britain May 1915- Lusitania is sunk September 1915- Germany sinks the Arabic (liner) and then makes the Arabic pledge- promise not tosink unarmed liners. May 1916- Germany sinks the Sussex (liner) and takes the Sussexpledge- to abide by the rules of visit and search and not sink unarmed liners. March 1917- Zimmerman note is made public by Wilson April 1917- U.S. enters the war
