  1. Rules to Follow By Kristi Clower

  2. Netiquette Rules • When writing an email, consider the feelings of others. • If someone is trying to hurt you online, let an adult know. • Sending insulting messages online can have negative consequences. • Do not be quick to get upset if someone hurts your feelings by something they say to you online. • Do not join in on a discussion group or forum for the purpose of causing trouble or to disrupt the chat. If you do, you can expect people to become angry. • Do not share personal information to anyone online. If someone shares this type of information with you, it should be kept to yourself. • When using the computer, show ownership. Take responsibility and do not do things that would harm others. • With the internet changing all the time, it is hard for everyone to keep up with these changes. If someone needs help with the computer, be kind and lend them your help.

  3. Copyright and Fair Use • By definition, copyright refers to a person creating a piece of work, whether it be a piece of writing, art work, photo, play, or music, and having the rights to ownership of this original creation. • It is against the law to copy, share, perform, display, or make changes to someone else’s work without their permission. • One important exception to this law is the concept of fair use. • Fair use allows the public to use copyrighted information without the permission of the original owner of the work depending upon what the material is being used for and how much of the material is being used. The degree to which the public can use copyrighted work has its limitations.

  4. Tips about Plagiarism • By definition, plagiarism is using words from works that are not your own and not giving the proper credit to the author of the work you are getting your information from. • When you plagiarize someone else’s work, it is considered stealing just like it would be if you stole money from someone. • Just as stealing money would get you into big trouble so can plagiarizing someone’s work without giving them the credit for it. • It is very important that if you use the words of someone else in a paper that you are writing, even if you do not say them exactly the way that they said them, that you ask your teacher for the proper way to give that person credit for using their work.

  6. Highlights of safety on the web • Do not share your personal information on the Internet. This includes your name, address, telephone number, or school name. • Do not post pictures of yourself on the Internet or download any information without permission from your parents or a responsible adult. • If for any reason you are made to feel uncomfortable while you are on the Internet, whether you read something or someone says something to you, you should tell your parents or a responsible adult right away. • You should also remember that people are not always honest when they give out information on the Internet. A person might say that she is a girl who is ten, when really this person might be an older man who is 50 years old.

  7. Safety for a computer • When you are using a computer, they are important safety tips that you need to keep in mind. • A computer is a piece of electronic equipment that has the potential to start a fire because it is plugged into an electrical outlet. Therefore, do not use a computer when it is thundering or lightning outside, or if you think bad weather is coming, just be safe and turn the computer off. This includes unplugging the computer from the electrical outlet. You may want to ask for permission from a responsible adult or your parent before you do this. • Also when dealing with the wires that plug the computer into the wall or electrical outlet, these wires can be a safety hazard. You need to make sure that these wires are not in walkways where people can trip over them when they walk and hurt themselves. • Another important safety issue to remember when using a computer is to not eat or drink too close to your computer. If liquids and certain foods get spilled onto your computer or keyboard, they can damage the equipment and make it where you may not be able to use them for a long time or possibly ever again. • One final safety issue to remember when using a computer is that information may be present on the computer that is personal to you or your family and does not need to be shared with others. Remember to be mindful of what information you share with others, and do not give out any information that someone could identify you or your family by: names, addresses, school names, church names, birthdates, social security numbers, or names of places where you might be going.
