  1. The Old English Sheepdog A Judging Seminar Approved by the Old English Sheepdog Club of America

  2. Early 20th Century Dog • Illustration from The Old English Sheep Dog • Henry Arthur Tilley • Revised Edition 1937 • Ch Elkington Squire • Can we compare this dog to the present Standard?

  3. General Appearance • A strong, compact, square balanced dog. • Taking him all around, he is profusely, but not excessively coated, thickset, muscular and able-bodied. • These qualities, combined with his agility, fit him for the demanding tasks required of a shepherd’s or drover’s dog. • Therefore, soundness is of the greatest importance! • His bark is loud with a distinctive “pot-casse” ring in it.

  4. Characteristics • Sound and well balanced • Muscular hindquarters with well let down hocks • Higher at the loin than at the withers • Fairly long neck with well laid back shoulders • Almost square proportions • Fairly long, strong, square, truncated muzzle • Large square back-skull • Dark brown eyes or wall-eyes • Scissors or level Bite • Large black nose

  5. Skeletal drawing by Alexandra Haeseker

  6. Size, Proportion, Substance • Type, character and balance are of greater importance and are on no account to be sacrificed to size alone.

  7. Size Dog Bitch • Height (measure from top of withers to ground) • Dogs: 22 inches (55.8 cm) and upward • Bitches: 21 inches (53.3 cm) and upward

  8. Proportion • Length, measured from point of shoulder to point of ischium (tuberosity), practically the same as the height. Absolutely free from legginess or weaselness. • The point of shoulder is commonly understood to be the articulation of the upper arm and the shoulder blade.

  9. Substance • Well muscled with plenty of bone.

  10. Head • A most intelligent expression
