Schools on the Move project in Turku focusing on increasing physical activity to enhance children's wellbeing and school experience. Emphasizing operational processes, common interest areas, and culture change at various levels. Addressing needs through participation, activation, and partnerships at city, national, and international levels.

Wide project on city level • situated in the School centre of the City of Turku • 18 primary schools, 3 secondary schools (=basic education), 3 upper secondary schools, vocational institute • different sectors of the city • National networks • The Young Finland Association • European co-operation • Active living -network • EU / Public Health Programme: Shape Up

BACKGROUND • + positive impacts of physical activity (PA) on health, wellbeing, concentration, learning etc. • + Turku strategy: wellbeing of children, adolescent and families (financial background) • + positive experience of previous cross sectional projects (Motion2000) • +/- Finnish students are good learners but they don’t feel at home at school • - decrease in physical activity of children and adolescent • - childhood obesity • SCHOOLS ON THE MOVE • MORE PA TO WHOLE SCHOOLDAY

GOALS • To use PA to increase the wellbeing of children and adolescent and help them to feel more cosy / at home at school. • - to develop the operational culture and environment in schools in order to promote physical activity • - operational processes in schools through which new ways to support physical activities are found.

YEAR 2007 • “More PA to a school day” as a permanent theme at schools in Turku • PA & well-being in the strategies on the city level & the Teaching and Education department -> also to the strategies of the schools • As a part of the job description of physical education instructors at Teaching and Education department Evaluation, reporting Securing of the follow-up/additional funding? (EU-funding, wellbeing funds, the City of Turku etc.)

  21. PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROJECT: With small concrete steps towards the high goal - the change in operational culture!
