A few funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers • Niels Stensenfellowships • A Catholicinstitution • 7 fellowshipsgrantedeveryyear (88 applicants in 2014) • To spend 9 to 12 monthsabroad to acquireexperiencebutyou are expected to come back to the Netherlandsafterwards. • Applicationssubmittedbytwo Professors affiliated to a Dutch university • All Professors in the Netherlandsreceive a yearlyinvitation to propose candidates. Askyour supervisor! • Possibility to applyifyou are about to defendyourPhDorwithin 2 yearsafterhavingdefendedit at a Dutch university.

A few funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers • NWO Rubicongrants • To spend 1 to 2 years at a universityabroad (alsolimitedopportunity to applyfor a research period at a Dutch universitybutforscientific disciplines that focus on Dutch topics). • 3 rounds per year, resultsknownwithin 4 months • Applicationassessedby a pluridisciplinarycommittee, noexternal referee • Possibility to applyonlyonce and withinoneyearafter the PhDdefense • Applicants must have conducted research at a Dutch universityfor a period of 3 yearsfteduring the 5 yearspreceding the application. • Youcannotapply to go to the country whereyoureceivedyour MA orPhD (unlessthat country is the Netherlandsbutthennot in the universitywhereyoureceivedyour MA and PhD). • Youcanapply to go to a country whereyou have already been conducting research butforno more than 6 months. • Importance of the choice of the host institute and of the tworecommendation letters

A few funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers • NWO Venigrants • Possibility to applyonlytwicewithin 3 yearsafter the PhDdefense. • 3 yearpostdoctoralgrant to work at a Dutch university • Selectionrate: around 15% • First selectionroundby a pluridisciplinarycommittee • Proposalassessedbytwoexternal referees • Youcanwrite a rebuttal to the referee reports. • If the referees’ reports are positive, youmightbeinvitedforan interview. • Budget: try to include as manythingsyoucanthink of becauseitcannotbemodifiedonce the grant has been awarded. Don’tincludebookpurchase!

A few funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers • FWO postdoctoralgrants • From 2016 onwards: application to besubmittedwithin 3 yearsafter the PhDdefense. • Possibility to applytwice at the maximum • Canberenewedoncefor 3 years. • Successrate 2013: 26% • Importance of A1 publications • Application must include a list of 10 potential referees. • No interview. • Pegasus-Marie-Curiefellowships • Pegasus long (up to 3 years) / Pegasus short (1 year) • Condition: to have been activeoutsideBelgiumfor 2 years over the last 3 years

Dealing with applications:a focus on chronological strategy and mobility • Chronologicalstrategy • Applyfirstforfundingintendedforresearcherswho have justdefendedtheirPhD. • Mobility • Important for all the applications: international activities and research staysabroad • Someapplications (Niels Stensen, Rubicon, Humboldtfellowship, Marie Curie fellowships…) are preciselyintended to increaseresearchers’ mobility. • Try to do it as early as possible in yourcareer, even for a short period (e.g. onemonth).
