  1. The Dangers of Biblical Ignorance

  2. Biblical Illiteracy • This is not a new problem, but one that has existed for a very long time. • “…some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures” (2 Peter 3:16). • “…they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:2-3).

  3. Destroyed for a Lack of Knowledge • “Mypeople are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (Hosea 4:6)

  4. How many of us are daily Bible readers? • Too often we fail to see our need to feed ourselves spiritually (Matt. 4:4). • Right food: word of God (1 Peter 2:2). • Right nourishment: comes from Christ (Colossians 2:18-19). • Right exercise: unto godliness (1 Tim. 4:7-8).

  5. We Need to be Daily Bible Readers • Psalm 1:1-2 • 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.

  6. We Need to Give Time to Bible Study • “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17). • “how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ” (Ephesians 3:3-4).

  7. We Need to Give Time to Bible Study • “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine” (1 Tim. 4:13). • “Be diligent (study, KJV) to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

  8. Obtain Knowledge, Remove Ignorance • Paul did not want the saints in Corinth to be ignorant of spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:1). • 1 Corinthians 12-14

  9. Obtain Knowledge, Remove Ignorance • Paul did not want the saints in Thessalonica to be ignorant of saints that had died. • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

  10. Destroyed for a Lack of Knowledge? • Are you able to say, in order, all 66 books of the Bible? • Are you able to find the books easily? • If not, why not? • Many Christians, and children of Christians, cannot do so.

  11. Destroyed for a Lack of Knowledge?

  12. Destroyed for a Lack of Knowledge? Hebrews 5:11-14 • Have you become “dull of hearing”? • Should be a teacher, but need to be taught? • Forgotten spiritual truths you once knew? • Still need the milk, and can’t handle the meat? • Unable to discern both good and evil?

  13. Destroyed for a Lack of Knowledge? Hebrews 5:11-14 • Are you able to teach someone the plan of salvation (show them the Scriptures)? • Are you able to explain to someone why we don’t use instruments in our worship? • Can you teach what NT says about baptism?

  14. Have You Not Read? Matthew 19:3-6 • 3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” • 4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' • 5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? • 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

  15. Have You Not Read? Matthew 22:28-32 • 28 “Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

  16. Have You Not Read? • What does the Bible teach about marriage? (Matt. 19:4-6; Eph. 5:22-33; Col. 3:18-19; 1 Peter 3:1-7) • What does the Bible say about parents & children? (Eph. 6:1-4; Col. 3:20-21) • What does the Bible say about the Christian and civil government? (Romans 13:1-7) • How is a local church to be organized? (Phil. 1:1) • What are an elder’s qualifications? (1 Tim. 3:1-7) • What are a deacon’s qualifications? (1 Tim. 3:8-13) • What happens when we die? (Luke 16:19-31) • What does Bible teach about heaven and hell? (Matt. 25:31-46; Rom. 2:4-11)

  17. What Must I Do to be Saved? Acts 16:30 • You must hear the gospel of Christ (Rom. 10:16-17). • You must believe on Jesus Christ (John 3:16; 8:24). • You must repent of your sins (Acts 17:30-31). • You must confess the Lord Jesus (Romans 10:9-10). • You must be baptized into Christ for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16). • You must then remain faithful till death (Rev. 2:10). • When you sin, confess & repent of it (1 John 1:9).
