José Antonio Aguirre Lekube: Architect of Basque Freedom and European Resistance

José Antonio Aguirre Lekube, born in 1904 in Bilbao, was a prominent Basque politician and the first President of the Basque Autonomous Government during the Spanish Civil War. A member of the EAJ-PNV party, he served as the Mayor of Getxo and formed the Basque Army to mobilize 100,000 soldiers in support of the autonomous republic. After defeat, he fled to France and continued to lead Basque exiles in resistance against Nazism and Fascism. Aguirre's legacy as a European hero endures, representing a commitment to freedom and democracy.
