Background • The Harvard Kennedy School degree course STM-480 "Leadership for a Networked World" is taught by Professor Jerry Mechling and is for degree students seeking to create innovation and progress in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The course is designed to improve analysis and implementation for many of the dramatic information-related changes now underway around the globe. We focus primarily on leadership and management, not on technology; the course requires no technical background and you'll learn what you need as we go. LNW is about how information technologies -- when combined with institutional change and effective leadership -- can impact the productivity, equity, and legitimacy of public services and governance.

Background • Learning in LNW also benefits from cases, readings, written assignments, supplemental technology and review sessions, and interactions with occasional classroom guests (e.g., government Chief Information Officers, leaders of various innovation initiatives, et. al.). • I am an invited practitioner for the past 3 years. • See next slide.

Assignment • 1. If you haven't already posted a note regarding which practitioners you'd like to contact, please do so by 8pm tomorrow (Tuesday) night. • Professor Mechling suggested I interact with Ryan Androsoff and Kevin Sun. I also helped Gennie Snow with a putting her Stakeholder Table spreadsheet in Spotfire. See next slide. • 2. Please post an outline in Powerpoint to the website no later than Saturday night. Your outline should contain the following sections:  problem, objective, alternatives, consequences, recommendations and sources of information.   The outline shouldn't contain all your information, consider it a framework upon which you can build.   • 3. Please plan to comment on a minimum of 5 of your classmates' Powerpoints over the next week.  • 4. Brief presentations by each person/team will occur on either Monday, November 29th or Wednesday December 1st to the class.  The purpose of these presentations is to continue the dialogue and for you to gain additional insights from your classmates.  We will post shortly which groups will present on what days.

Outline of Briefing Topic • Theme: Social Business Intelligence from Open Government Data. • Problem: Decision-makers need to see data, metadata (e.g. data quality), and visualizations organized in dashboards that use state-of-the-art analytics and statistics. • Objective: Data to support decision-making are extracted from various sources into Excel spreadsheets which are in-turn imported into Spotfire Analytics. The methodology, metadata, and results are captured in the Mindtouch 2010.

Outline of Briefing Topic • Alternatives: Decisions are not fact-based or communicated in effective visualizations to the public in a transparent and open manner. • Consequences: The public has a high-level of mistrust for government and its leaders. • Recommendations: Students and Practitioners should become aware of Data Science and Graduate Classes in Data Science.
