NC STATE UNIVERSITY On-campus employment On-campus employment: Employment on NC State’s campus for which payment MUST be received through NC State’s Payroll. • University Career Center (Clark Hall) • Departments • Other campus units (library, gym, cafeteria, etc.) Graduate Research or Teaching Assistantships are assigned by Faculty in each department.

NC STATE UNIVERSITY Work authorization: F-1 status Work authorization for on-campus employment: • Students in F-1 status automatically have work authorization to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week. No application is necessary. • Students in F-1 status may work full time on campus during official semester breaks (winter break and summer break), as long as enrolled for the following semester. NC STATE UNIVERSITY Work authorization: F-1 status Work authorization for off-campus employment (internships): Curricular Practical Training (CPT): - Internship must be directly related to your academic program, • You must be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA for graduate students, 2.5 GPA for undergraduate students) • You must have been enrolled full time for 2 consecutive semesters (9 months) before becoming eligible, • OIS issues work authorization – application process takes 2 weeks on average. NC STATE UNIVERSITY Work authorization: J-1 status Work authorization for on-campus employment: • Students in J-1 status MUST APPLY FOR work authorization to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week. Work authorization is granted by J-1 Sponsor: http://www.ncsu.edu/ois/current/oncamp.php • Students in J-1 status may work full time on campus during official semester breaks (winter break and summer break), as long as enrolled for the following semester. Employment authorization must be requested before engaging in any employment.

NC STATE UNIVERSITY Work authorization: J-1 status Work authorization for off-campus employment: • J-1 students have a right to 1 month of off-campus work authorization, called Academic Training, for every month enrolled as a full time student. • The off-campus employment (academic training) must be directly related to the degree program. • J-1 students must be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA for graduate students, 2.5 GPA for undergraduate students). • An application with the J-1 program sponsor (i.e. OIS or Fulbright Program) is required. Work authorization processing time depends on the sponsor – 5 days for OIS): http://www.ncsu.edu/ois/current/j1actrain.php

NC STATE UNIVERSITY Other work authorization (F-1) Optional Practical Training (OPT): • Post-completion OPT: After completing a degree, a student in F-1 status can apply for 12 months of “post-completion OPT” (Off-campus employment authorization related to your field of study). • Pre-completion OPT: Off-campus work authorization which can be used during your degree program (part of 12 month total). The application for both forms of OPT is submitted to USCIS (with help from OIS) and can take up to 90 days to be processed. The application fee is $380.   10. NC STATE UNIVERSITY Other work authorization (J-1) Academic Training: • J-1 students are eligible to apply for Academic Training during or shortly after their degree program. Each student has a right to 18 months of full time academic training. • The application is submitted to the J-1 Sponsor (i.e. OIS or Fullbright) and the processing time depends on the sponsor: 5 days for OIS.
