  2. S= Survey/Preview • Look at the assigned chapter, its title and headings. • Read the introduction • 1st sentence in paragraph • The last paragraph & summary • Look at charts, graphs, photos, etc.

  3. Q = Question • Reading to answer questions can increase retention of material • Create your own questions • Instructor’s questions • Questions at the end of the chapter • Change the headings in the book into questions • “Reduce Stress” to “How can I reduce stress?”

  4. R= Read • Stay focused on readings • Take breaks every hour/half-hour • Make notes of areas to cover again later • Do not highlight at this point • Summarize what you have read on paper. Make sure that all questions have been answered

  5. R= Recite • Recite what you have written down. Do it out loud! • Try to study with classmates/groups Reciting material out loud increases retention. • Only 20% of material recited is forgotten within 2 weeks. • 80% of materials is forgotten in 2 weeks if not recited!

  6. R= Review • Within 24 hours • Now you can highlight important facts • Redo notes as needed and review them consistently
