Greek Derivatives or Morphemes • Ethos = character • Pathos = suffering or experience • Logos = word
Ethos Definition • An appeal based on the author’s credibility or character. Used in both persuasion and argument.. • Can be: • Expert testimony (often used incorrectly with celebrities) • Reliable Sources • Fair and trustworthy speech
Pathos Definition • An appeal based on emotions. Something which creates great sadness, worry, anger, fear, or happiness, joy, laughter, and community in the audience. Mainly used in persuasion. • Can be: • Written • Visual • Audio
Logos Definition • An appeal based on logic and reasoning. Includes claims and warrants. This is the main one used for Argument vs. Persuasion. • Can be: • Analogies • Statistics • Facts
