Name at least 3: Direct: Indirect: 1. … 1. … 2. … 2. … 3. … 3. … 1) In sentence 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 the subject of the sentence changes in indirect speech (we  they & I  she/he). why? Answer: Because in those direct sentences, the subjects are the persons talking. Therefore, ifthey are repeated in indirect speech bysomeoneelse, the pronouns have to change. Youcan’t say: “I saw a unicorn” ifyou’retalkingaboutsomeoneelsewhosaidthat. 2) Whathappensto the verbs in the sentences? Answer: The verbs change into a form further down towards the past on the timeline. Present simple past simple Present continuous  past continuous Past simple  past perfect Present perfect  Past perfect. 3) Question 2 getswhether/if but question 3 doesn’t. Why? Answer: Sentence 3 has aninterrogative (question word: where) andsentence 2 doesn’t. 4) Whydoesn’t the verb ‘like’ (sentence 8) change in indirect speech? Answer: Becausethatsentence is a negationsoit has the auxiliaryverb ‘to do’ + not in it. The auxiliaryverb ‘to do’ changes in stead of the mainverb (tolike) do not didnot/didn’t . 5) Why do tomorrow (sentence 10) andtonight (sentence 11) change to the dayafterandthatnight? Answer: Becausewhenyou say whatsomeoneelsesaid at a certain time, itmightnotbeaboutyesterday, tomorrow, or tonightanymore. It mightalreadybe a few weeks ago. Ifyou have bought a sofa on Sundayandyoutellyourfriendaboutthis on Monday “I bought a sofa yesterday” yourfriendcan’t say you had boughtityesterday a week later. Thereforeyourfriendshould say: “He/shesaid he/she had boughtit the daybefore. “ 6) Canyouthink of more words, thatexpress time, thatwould change in indirect speech because of thatreason?
