In the end, a new start ispossible. • Tragedyhas asolemn style and a high language.

  5. Romeo and Juliet: a tragedy or a comedy? Romeo and Julietwas a mix tragic and comic elements • The two protagonists belong to noble families, but they are inexperienced young people • They do not commit a crime, but they are involved in their families’ guilt • They fall in love • Like in a comedy, the plot is based on coincidences, intrigues and equivocations, but the coincidences are all unlucky and bring to the death of the two protagonists • In the first two acts, there are many funny scenes, dances, songs and humours characters, the real tragedy begins only in the third act • There is a big variety of language: comic dialogues based on puns alternate with inspired soliloquies or dialogues of high poetry
