Europe's Future: Balancing Nationalism and European Integration for Global Peace and Progress

This text delves into the evolving identity of Europe as a bastion of hope, diversity, and transformative ideals amid rising nationalism. It examines the European Union’s role as a global actor driven by values, promoting peace and addressing global challenges like climate change. With reflections on integration, the importance of social values, and the critique of elitism in the EU Commission, this work questions whether Europe is at the end of an idea or merely witnessing the spread of new ones. It emphasizes the imperative of collaboration in a world challenged by division and conflict.

  1. Philomena Murray Europe – the End of an Idea or the Spread of Ideas?

  2. Our idea of Europe?

  3. Europe as hope – transformative – diversity – nationalism vs Europeanism

  4. The peace imperative. The normative imperative. The Integration exporter • War is God's way of teaching Americans geography (Ambrose Bierce). • Europe is God’s way of teaching the world about peace? • People in the [EU] Commission are integration snobs in the sense that we’ve done something and, because it worked…successfully, we sort of think we know it all … and I think that we come across as being very arrogant sometimes.

  5. Rhetoric- spread of ideas, norms, values • ‘EU is very definitely a value-driven global actor’ • ‘EU international ambitions going to be value-driven’ • ‘The EU has global ambitions in terms of dousing civil wars wherever possible’, ‘in terms of pointing the world, steering the world, dragging the world in the righteous path on climate change, biodiversity….’

  6. Social Europe, Social values • If we all agreed through ASEAN, APEC, NAFTA, the EC, GATT and the IMF to knock off work early and be with our children, no one in the world would have a competitive advantage. (Elliot Perlman, 1998).

  7. Australia and Europe - the burden of memory - CAPUK

  8. Kevin Rudd and European Commission President Barroso – the way forward?

  9. Monnet’s or Sarkozy’s Idea of Europe?

  10. THE FUTURE • No return to nationalist hatred. • EU here to stay. • Crisis? 112million. Eppur si muove • Spectre of war • Anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim sentiment, exclusionism. • The EU is not the only soft power. • Speak softly, carry big carrot. • Self-engrossed? • Visionaries?
