  1. Writing From Outlines RMES Jr. High 7th Grade Writing Unit

  2. Steps • Write your essay, following the outline you have created. For each section, first talk about the Arctic (or Antarctic) and then talk about the other. • Make sure you use Topic Sentences for each paragraph. • A TS lets the reader know what your paragraph will be about. • It can be in the beginning, middle, or end—wherever it fits best. • Give examples for each aspect(animals, temperature, human activity, ect). • Transitional words help! Look in p. 588 on your Grammar book. • Then give a transition sentence(aka linking sentence) that hints to the reader what you will talk about next. • That’s it!

  3. Example: Animals in the A&A Outline Paragraph When it comes to animals, the Arctic and Antarctic have a lot in common. First, they both have them, particularly the land animals. Because of the tundra, the Arctic has many foxes, lynxes, and reindeer while the Antarctic is known for the small land animals it has, such as penguins, as well as for the many sea creatures. The top predatory mammal of the far north is the polar bear, who eats mostly seals while the top predatory animal in the Antarctic is …xyz. There are less land animals in the Antarctic because of its landform. • II. Animals A. The Arctic • Many foxes, caribou, wolves, lynxes, and reindeer. B. The Antarctic 1. Many sea creatures and small land animals.

  4. Key Words Comparison(Similarities) Contrast(Different) However On the contrary On the other hand Even though In contrast Although Unlike Conversely Meanwhile In addition Correspondingly Compared to Similarly Just as As well as Likewise Same as At the same time

  5. A Bit of Creativity! Though creativity and artfulness are not always associated with essay writing, it is an art form nonetheless. Try not to get stuck on the formulaic nature of expository writing at the expense of writing something interesting. Remember, though you may not be crafting the next great novel, you are attempting to leave a lasting impression on the people evaluating your essay. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/02/
