  3. Characteristics • Landforms • Mountainous regions • Debris from the mountains has developed a few sections of rolling land • There are also some plateaus and valleys

  4. Characteristics • Vegetation • vastly covered by a variety of vegetation • small, nutrient rich river valleys • - agriculture can be sustained in these valleys

  5. Characteristics • Climate • precipitation differs greatly from the West to the East • mountains are in the center of the region and block out most of the precipitation that is coming into the West • Long, cold winters • Short, cool summers • Growing season only 125-150 days

  6. Characteristics • Soil • Hardly any soil on the slopes of the mountain • Lower ranges have rich subsoil because of all the organic matter and minerals running off from the mountains

  8. Terms and Concepts • Residential Land • Land used by individuals or families for private residences • A lot of land is used for residential purposes, especially in Whitehorse

  9. Terms and Concepts • Basaltic Rock • extrusive igneous rock • occurs in extensive lava flows • E.g. occurs in the lava flows that make up the Boreal Cordillera’s plateau

  10. Terms and Concepts • Cinder Cones • the most common type of volcanoes • volcanic activity continues in the many domes and cinder cones that make up a plateau built up by basaltic lava flows

Characteristics • Human Activities • Inhabited for over 4000 years • Well known for the Klondike gold rush • Major communities are Whitehorse, Dawson, Haines Junction • economic activities include forestry, tourism, mining, and hydroelectric development • Almost two-thirds of the zone’s 31,000 people live in Whitehorse

  12. Characteristics • Human Activities • Due to the vast amounts of forested areas, forestry is an important economic activity • This region has plentiful mineral deposits • Tourism is also an important industry because of Kluane National Park, and the many rivers and mountains

  13. Points Negative - The toxic tailings and environmental damage from mines have long lasting effects Positive - The First Nations people have a significant say in managing the environment here Interesting -The anatum peregrine falcon is threatened in this area

  14. Geographic Issues -timber industries are cutting down too much of the forests -the spruce beetle destroys even more spruce trees than the logging industry
