  2. Leadership

  3. Situation From August 2012 until June 2013, I worked at a dance studio in Belleville Ontario teaching dancers at a local studio. I was both a competitive and recreational teacher who taught students ranging in ages 6 to 17. As the year progressed, bickering between parents, students, and fellow dance teachers emerged within the studio. Negative comments were being spread throughout the studio regarding parents, students and teachers. This created tension within the studio and a negative teaching environment for the students and myself as a teacher.

  4. Action As someone who my students looked up to, I openly stated to the parents and other teachers at the studio, that I would not take part in any negative discussions about individuals at the studio. I decided to remove myself from the negativity and became a neutral party. I encouraged other teachers to also take a stance against this type of behaviour.

  5. Result My decision to remove myself from the negativity resulted in my students further respecting me as a teacher, my boss respecting me as an employee and the parents appreciated my ability to stay focused on the kids. I also succeeded in helping other teachers recognize the importance of separating work from personal life. I helped them realized that their role as a dance teacher was to encourage the students to learn in a positive environment, free of negativity. Overall, my biggest accomplishment dealing with this situation was being able to remove negative energy from the studio, and teach my students to the best of my ability.

  6. Time Management

  7. Situation Throughout my four years studying at Queen’s University, I led an extremely busy lifestyle. I had to figure out a way to successfully balance a competitive dance program, my university academics and a part-time job, while simultaneously finding the time to experience and enjoy the social aspect that universities offer its students.

  8. Action In order to ensure I managed my time efficiently, I trained myself to do the following: • Always pre-planned my schedule at least a week in advanced • Prioritized my time efficiently by categorizing my tasks by what I believe was the most important • Not ignore scheduling conflicts until it is too late by bringing these matters directly to my superiors (managers, professors, dance captain) • Always focused on my desired goals: graduating with excellent grades while keeping a social life

  9. Results My ability to manage my time efficiently resulted in me attaining excellent grades and graduating with my degree. I remained a part time employee at a local Kingston restaurant for 3 years, and remained a member of Queen’s University Competitive Dance team for 3 consecutive years. I simultaneously managed to develop and keep lasting friendships throughout my four years at school. Overall, I succeeded in handling a demanding schedule and learned how to properly deal with stressful situations.

  10. Teamwork

  11. Situation During my second year attending Queen’s University, I was placed with a partner for a sociology project. The assignment was to be completed by both members equally and one grade would be given for the combined work. I quickly learned that my partner was not pulling their weight and I found myself doing most of the work myself. With my demanding schedule, I realized that I could not complete the project in time without my partner’s help.

  12. Action Rather than expressing my concerns to my professor and risk having my partner potentially fail the assignment, I decided to handle the situation on my own. I asked my partner to meet up and I immediately told him I was unhappy with his lack of contribution to the project. I also expressed the seriousness of the situation and that if necessary I would have to speak with our professor.

  13. Result My partner realized the seriousness of the situation, and was very apologetic. We ended up working very well together after our conversation, and through excellent teamwork finished the project in time. Furthermore, our poster assignment was one of the best in the class and was chosen to be hung in the main campus library.
