  2. Learning objectives TITLE • Introduction to Succeed, its background, benefits and structure • Ability to use the Succeed questionnaire and materials • Awareness of participation and self-reflection

Succeed characteristics • Succeed is a ’grass-roots’ version of a scientific questionnaire. • It contains sets of questions covering the core content of evidence-based indicators. • Comparatively easy language and methodology, participatory approach. • You can use Succeed with different levels of ambition, time and resources

  4. Succeed : Background TITLE • Modelled on the basic ideas of Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement • Based on a scientific review of success factors in Health Promotion in 1992 (13 general success factors/indicators identified) • Essay won a national quality award 1994 • How to succeed in health promotion 1994 • Evaluated in 1996 • Published in Health Promotion International in 2001 • Succeed -adapted to HIV-prevention in 2011

Benefits of using Succeed TITLE • Document your work and report on progress in a systematic way • Re-define and improve areas of work that have become habitual. • Identify gaps • Focus on impact and sustainability • Involve the people who are doing the work in the change process • Involve key stakeholders, get their help to improve the work and clarify their roles

  6. FOR WHAT CAN SUCCEED BE USED? • Any defined effort for population based health promotion and prevention of HIV, STIs as well as SRHR ( including HIV/STI prevention) • NGOs and Public Sector operations • Large or small operations • Defined project or defined part of ongoing operations

  7. When to use Succeed • In the beginningto check your planning • Aftersometimetoreview and improveyourwork • Use Succed first to acquaint stakeholders with QI, then follow up with more comprehensive or targeted Quality Improvement (e.g. QIP, PQD) Succeed is not a planning tool!

  8. Succeed : Materials • The questionnaire, including a short introduction available on www.qualityaction.eu • 3 case studies: MMSM, SAPHY and NSP. • User Guide – How to use Succeed • Theoretical background paper : Succeed - a knowledge-based tool

Succeed : Methodology • Questions for each indicator, reflecting the research on success factors. • Succeed does not use measurable standards, • Questions are designed to stimulate self-assessment and reflection. • Questions answered YES point to good quality and potential achievements in this area. • Questions answered NO often indicate a gap and need for improvement in this area.

  10. What to do with YES and NO? At the end of each set of questions: • Write a small summary for the indicator • Note the achievements • Identify the need for improvements. Which changes can be made that are important, meaningful, feasible, cost effective? • Discuss what to do, who will do it and by when

Group Work Activity • Work in groups of three/four • As a group, choose a topic from the questionnaire • Look at the answers in the case study and contrast with the answers you would give on your own project • Discuss and report back: What kinds of improvements can result from using this section?

HOW TO USE SUCCEED ? • High • participation • Use Succeed as a discussion guide in a group of key stakeholders • Let different key stakeholders fill in the questionnaire and meet and compare results • Just compile the results and present them • Let the project team or the management review the work by using Succeed • Use Succeed as a template for formative evaluation • Low • Participation

  14. Group Methodology Options • Large discussion group • Small groups with a facilitator in each and someone documenting • Challenge the group to give reasons for their statements - concrete examples, data etc. • Differences of opinion are valuable opportunities.

Organising and facilitating Succeed workshops • The project team only • The project team and other members of your organisation ( the manager, other operations, board member etc) • The project team, volunteers and some representatives from the key population • Some from the project team, target groups, key stakeholders, manager, external experts

  16. The Succeed event • Facilitation - an open and inviting atmoshere, encouraging participation, praise and constructive critisism • Answer the relevant questions • Pitch it at the right level of ambition • Prepare relevant data and information • Invite participants’ feed-back on the event

  17. Follow-up • Strategy for using and communicating results- what to communicate, to whom and when • Suggest your planned communication strategy to participants and invite feed back • Make sure that the priorities for action are clear to all • Decide if and when to review progress again
